TODAY is the SECOND day of The 2017 NAB Show – and what can I say? Broadcast Beat had an OUTSTANDING coverage day of the Show yesterday, and it’s going to be even BIGGER and BETTER today! The BB staff was hopping – extremely instrumental in allowing us to get the word out about the Show and all the products appearing there!
Here we are – getting ready for DAY 2 – everybody is bright-eyed and bushy-tailed… our crews have checked-in and we’re ready to roll! It’s another beautiful day here in Las Vegas Nevada and I’m glad that I ordered the gorgeous weather!
Adjusting the PowerVision PowerEgg drone with a 4K camera is a piece of cake! This sleek eye of the airwaves has a distinctive shape and bleeding edge engineering, and is a powerful personal camera drone that also conveys elegance and aesthetic. With a maximum flight time of 23 minutes (based on its smart battery capacity of 6400 mAh), you can capture a good portion of just about anything! An amazing device and even more amazing technology!
Macon Leiper tells us about ikancorp ‘s new NiSi filters. All ikancorp products are of High-Quality Construction and contain the latest in technical knowledge that places their offerings in a superior position in the industry! For example, their Natural Night Filter (NIP-100-NGT) is designed specifically to block the most common wavelengths of light pollution. This includes many undesirable wavelengths of light that pollute the night sky such as mercury vapor, sodium, and low CRI LED streetlights. The Natural Night Filter by NiSi is a 2mm H-K9L high definition optical glass filter that has double-sided anti-glare coating. Jaimi and David Alexander, Commercial Director for BRAINSTORM, talk about some of the products featured at NAB Show. NUGEN Audio Technical Director, Paul Tapper, talks about their award-winning surround software Halo Downmix – a new solution for delivering accurate downmixes that are no longer limited to typical in-the-box coefficient-based processes. It allows for unprecedented adjustment, and provides visual controls for relative levels, timing and direct vs. ambient sound balance. Not only can dialog level be maintained effectively with phantom center ratio controls and excess ambient sound from rear channels be managed easily, low frequencies can also be regulated to ensure appropriate levels in downmix, and timing artifacts in surround channels introduced by legacy upmix practices are now easy to fix, either manually or by using the Halo Downmix auto detection functionality. Tama Berkeljon of Outsight Pty Ltd shows off their battery-powered LED lights. They can get over one hour operation from a modest sized battery pack, or even longer with Ni-MH or Li-Ion technologies. Outsight pioneers new solutions for the industry and with their rapid design and build capabilities, coupled with exacting quality standards, have brought them into contact with some of the most progressive companies in the content production world. In 2004, their first big project had them design and build one of the first large-scale high-power LED installations used in the film industry for the production of director George Miller’s Happy Feet with 60 fixtures providing 6kW of reliable LED light for motion capture.
Dan Miall, CEO, BirdDog Gear, discusses converting video to an NDI IP signal. With a team of innovative and slightly quirky engineers, their goal is simple – make great products at great prices. They are dedicated to simplifying the transition from baseband video to IP workflows such as NDI. Their BirdDog Studio enables existing cameras to be included into a new IP workflow for live productions. Once converted, the possibilities of live productions are magnified. Any network connection becomes a live video input into your switcher, when the HDMI or SDI signal is transformed to an IP signal. More flexible video inputs into live production are possible (NDI compatible device is required).
Jaimi at LiveU with Chris Perry, Product Manager, listening about their teaming with BeTerrific, presenting the live studio of the future. BeTerrific will showcase a streamlined production workflow to help visitors see how easy and affordable it is to set up a live studio anywhere, without a large production crew or lots of equipment. At The Show, LiveU introduced its new hybrid satellite and cellular HD solution, transforming its ultra-small LU200e uplink unit into a rack-mounted product. Leveraging LiveU’s proven bonding technology, the LU210 and LU220 solutions allow news teams to combine satellite and cellular networks for newsgathering on-the-move and in fixed locations. LiveU is driving the live video revolution, providing live video streaming for TV, mobile, online and social media.
Matthew Goldman, President of SMPTEconnect, talks new SMPTE IP standards. SMPTE members exist in over 65 countries worldwide; SMPTE itself is recognized as the global leader in the development of standards and authoritative practices for film, television, video and multimedia. Over 200 sustaining (institutional) Members belong to SMPTE, branching-out so as to reach even the smallest media imaging niche. Now present in every discipline, their thousands of members include engineers, technical directors, cameramen, editors, technicians, manufacturers, designers, educators, consultants and field users in networking, compression, encryption and any other field employing images. They stay one step ahead of technology via their frequent technical conferences and seminars, which encourage useful interaction and information exchange.
Bob Boster, President of ClearCom, explains how their new Agent-IC product can manage thousands of audio channels at once. Agent-IC is a downloadable app that provides Eclipse-HX administrators the option of having a fully-featured mobile user station on iOS and Android devices. Each Agent-ICClient’s access is managed by the central administration control within the Eclipse HX EHX Software. The system supports user login and audio encryption for a secure and private interface with Eclipse-HX. Agent-IC supports one-to-one, one-to-many, partyline, ISO and IFB communication. The app also supports local cross-point level control and notification functions.
Tony Trent, General Manager at Atomos, has coffee and chats-up their new HDR Sumo cinema display. By creating the first production/studio monitor to combine a 19” HDR 1200nit 10+ stop panel with 4K 12bit Raw or 10bit 422 ProRes/DNxHR recording and HD recording up to 240p or live switching and recording of four 1080p60 channels, Atomos has toppled the industry through the addition of recording, switching and playback, creating a true revolution, completely redefining how production monitors will be used on set and in studio. It gives clients and crew on set instant access to review recorded content in HDR quality and doubles as a grading and editing monitor for laptops in the field. The live switching and recording is another dimension again adding the flexibility to live switch between four 1080/60p channels, record 4 x ISO channels and mix a live record complete with cueing, cross fade and hard cuts.
Ryan just interviewed Actor Joel De La Fuente and Executive Producer Daniel Percival of Amazon Prime’s “Man In The High Castle.” Winner of two Emmy Awards and based on Philip K. Dick’s award-winning novel (and executive produced by Ridley Scott (Blade Runner), and Frank Spotnitz (The X-Files)), The Man in the High Castle explores what it would be like if the Allied Powers had lost WWII, and Japan and Germany ruled the United States. Starring Rufus Sewell (John Adams), Luke Kleintank (Pretty Little Liars), and Alexa Davalos (Mob City).

Stop by and check out the RFID- tracking system LOCKED ON – a tracking system ready-made for artists and the alike. LOCKED ON is an object tracking solution that controls one or more PTZ cameras or PTX fixtures using your favorite camera. It uses RFID tags and anchors, allowing cameras to automatically follow single or multiple moving targets in three-dimensional space. LOCKED ON receives positioning data from single or multiple battery powered transmitters (TAGS) sending positioning data to multiple RFID receivers (ANCHORS) placed around the perimeter of the space.
