The Desktop Publishing Specialist will format training packages, reports, information sheets, presentations and other publications for a variety of audiences and purposes. The Specialist will create layouts for print publications and presentation graphics, including illustrations and graphics, in a Windows environment,andw will use specialized desktop publishing software (e.g., MS Office package), Adobe Acrobat, and Photoshop. Also, the Specialist will use color and text to create documents that are readable, appropriate and meet the needs of both the intended audience and the organization.
Note: This role will be focused solely on desktop publishing. Therefore candidates must have previous desktop publishing experience for further consideration.


  • Format print materials (in English and other languages) using style sheets and templates. This requires advanced word processing skills, particularly in MS Word and MS PowerPoint.
  • Develop graphics for presentation, print and electronic materials.
  • Proofread documents (in English and other languages) at various stages of development.
  • Organize and catalogue graphics files.
  • Manage multiple desktop publishing projects effectively and efficiently.


  • HS Diploma or equivalent with 2 years of related experience; AA/BA degree preferred [ADD: Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.]
  • Proficiency in using desktop publishing software, including MS Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel), Adobe Acrobat and Photoshop.
  • Experience creating layouts for a variety of publications using a variety of software programs.
  • Experience creating layouts for scientific, medical or other technical materials.
  • Ability to work in a complex environment with multiple tasks, short deadlines and intense pressure to perform
  • Ability to work on both PC and Apple platforms.
  • Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously, setting priorities and meeting deadlines
  • Knowledge of English grammar and usage.
  • Ability to proactively organize and manage own work
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Familiarity with Illustrator, Acrobat, Photoshop and InDesign.

    Preferred Qualifications

  • Foreign language proficiency a plus, particularly in French, Portuguese, or Spanish
