The Digital Media Engineer is principally responsible for the implementation, operation, maintenance, and on-going support of the university’s digital media and audiovisual systems and applications. These include telepresence, video and web conferencing, classroom audiovisual technology, executive meeting spaces; and their integration with related IT services such as digital signage, unified communications, learning systems and spaces, special event systems and digital asset repositories. The position is also responsible for providing audiovisual support for special events. The position is expected to have a broad knowledge of state-of-the practice digital media and audiovisual technologies. As a self-starter with only general direction, the position demonstrates a high-level of creativity in the architecture and design of digital media and audio visual systems and a high-level of problem-solving and resourcefulness working with third-party suppliers and others to diagnose and resolve operational issues and incidents with digital media and audiovisual IT services. The position generally operates under deadlines and works closely with IT service teams throughout the IST Division leading digital media projects and/or representing digital media as part of other initiatives. The position trains other staff for first and second level support of digital media and audio visual IT services.
Responsibilities and Duties
Essential Functions: 1. Troubleshoots digital media and audiovisual systems such as video conferencing, telepresence, components of unified communication systems, codecs and video endpoints connected to a computer network and their integration and interoperability with related systems (e.g. classroom control, projection, lecture capture systems, technology enhanced learning spaces and production centers.) 2. Serves as the main administrator and liaison for Cisco WebEx and other video and web conferencing tools coordinating design, support and incident resolution with third-party suppliers. 3. Manages and oversees the architecture and design phases of digital media and audio visual initiatives. This involves working with third-party suppliers to validate the interoperability of design choices, and the preparation of design, bid, and/or procurement documents. 4. Manages and oversees the implementation and initial operation phases of digital media and audiovisual initiatives. This includes coordination of equipment installation, initial programming and configuration, testing, deployment and documentation of operational procedures. The position trains other IST staff for first- and second-level support of on-going operations. 5. Manages on-going operations of digital media and audiovisual initiatives, installing hardware, software and firmware releases and re-programming control systems for changes in operational requirements. Monitors platforms and services proactively, identifying and anticipating problems prior to them developing into emergencies and reporting recommendations to management. 6. Develops and maintains integration scripts for capturing metadata and storing digital media assets in various digital asset repositories. 7. Works closely with others throughout the IST Division and the university leading and/or participating actively on digital media and audiovisual projects and initiatives. 8. Provides after hours on-call support for critical systems issues as needed.
Additional Functions: 1. Keeps current with emerging technologies, new products, applications and trends within the digital media and audiovisual filed. 2. Functions as broadcast engineer when needed for high profile special events including live webcasts, video recordings, conferences, board meetings, commencements, convocations, and symposia. 3. Qualifications and Skills
Prerequisite Qualifications: 1. Bachelor’s degree in a media and/or technology related field. 2. Five years relevant work experience designing, implementing, and/or supporting digital media and audiovisual technologies at a large division or enterprise level including: 3 Demonstrated experience in advanced operations of digital media systems. 4 Demonstrated knowledge of audiovisual equipment and system design (both digital and analog). 5 Experience managing video conferencing hardware and software including experience in implementing, testing, and troubleshooting audiovisual or networking oriented software modules and features. 6 Experience configuring and programming audiovisual and digital media control systems 7 Experience in the deployment & management of enterprise server-based audio/video monitoring systems. 8 A successful record of taking projects from concept to completion 9. Expert knowledge of audiovisual architectures and control equipment and systems; projectors, microphones, speakers, cameras, codecs, bridging equipment and their interconnection over TCP/IP networks 10. Strong oral, written and communication and presentation skills in working with both technical staff and end users. 11. Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines
Preferred Qualifications: 1. Infocomm Certified Technology Specialist (CTS), Certified Technology Specialist – Design (CTS-D) and/or or Certified Technology Specialist – Installation (CTS-I) certification. 2. Experience in programming Crestron and/or Extron audiovisual control systems 3. Expertise with Cisco telepresence and other video conferencing solutions. 4. Experience in higher education. 5. Project management experience.
