A+E Networks To Develop Original Content And Shows For Snapchat

a2

A&E Networks has reached an agreement with the social media platform, Snapchat, to begin the development of original shows and content at Snapchat looks to jump into the streaming game with both feet. They will be starting the development of an all new reality show that isn’t based on any previous A&E brands.

Vice President of Content for Snapchat, Nick Bell, said of the deal that, “A&E’s investment in mobile storytelling is exactly what Snapchat shows are all about: The ability to create premium and wholly original content for a mobile-first audience from some of the best storytellers in the world. We are excited to break new ground with A&E Networks on our first unscripted series, with a concept that we think is raw and relatable.”

In an effort to seriously compete in the live streaming market, Snapchat held an IPO last week looking to raise about $3 billion to help fund the project. For Snapchat, striking a deal with A&E is just one more in a long line of major players that Snapchat is looking to work with in the future. The company has struck previous original content deals with Turner, NBCUniversal, Disney/ABC and the BBC.

Snapchat continues to strive to be an alternative to broadcast TV and has been attracting both investors as well as potential viewers. They have strong Millennial demographics and believe the future for reaching this audience is through mobile devices as opposed to traditional television.

While NetFlix, Hulu and Amazon remain the dominant streaming players, Snapchat looks to make a serious run at them both in the short term and in the log run.
