Mission & Overview (Summary)
The Audio/Video Systems Designer plays a vital role in the Thinkwell design process, they are the person responsible for ensuring that the signature high-quality sound and video of Thinkwell Projects is fully realized and implemented by all participants involved in the process of Audio / Video System Technical Design. High-quality sound and video is the Thinkwell standard that is delivered to the audience, be they museum visitors, corporate brand/sports team recruit, theme park guests or crowds enjoying a live performance. The process of creating dynamic sound and spectacular images range in scope from technical decisions related to the choice and placement of the speakers, amplifiers or monitors, projectors, screens and all the associated components that make up a quality audio, video system.
Thinkwell Design & Production typically divides the process of Audio and Video Technical Systems design into separate discrete tasks. But for some projects, it is advantageous to have one designer oversee all aspects of the process. Beginning with initial audio/video concepts through detailed design with in-field installation. The Audio / Video Systems Designer may function in the role of Audio or Video designer on individual projects, but will frequently have a broader role of both Audio and Video System Designer as well as managing additional in-house Designers or outside third party A / V vendors engaged for specific projects. The ultimate goal of the of the Audio / Video Systems Designer is to act as a steward of the overall system design to ensure that Thinkwell’s Audio, Video Systems provide a seamless and immersive guest experience.
Functions & Responsibilities
This role demonstrates strong technical skills and an interest in audio, video, and projection technical design. Should have a solid technical background in Audio / Video Technical System Design, installation and system programming for permanent installation and live venue environments.
Must be able to demonstrate prior experience and success with the entire project life-cycle – taking a project from concept through schematic, detail design, installation, testing, turn-over and ongoing maintenance and support. Develop and produce Audio / Video System performance standards, FAT and SAT testing manuals, requirements, instructions, and procedures.
Produce Technical A/V Power, Cabling, Riser, Facility Impact Matrix, System Design Documents
The Technical Audio, Video Designer reports directly to the Director of Technical Services Group but interfaces with multiple disciplines.
Must have flexible work schedule and the ability to travel domestically and internationally.
Work both independently and under the direction of a Senior Technical Designer in the creation of complete Technical Audio / Video Design Packages for multiple projects on parallel schedule tracks.
Provide technical supervision and oversight to outside contractors engaged by Thinkwell to produce Audio and Video system design, engineering and installation while ensuring the integrity of the Thinkwell design intent.
Actively research and qualify potential outside contractors to provide Thinkwell with A / V design, engineering and installation services.
Collaborate with and provide technical support to Project and Design Managers, Technical Directors and third-party consultants involved in the estimating project costs related to Audio / Video equipment and installation.
Actively engage in research into current trends, new technologies and methods of Audio /Video systems design. Ensure that new trends, technologies, and methods are directly applicable to Audio / Video design and that they support the integration of other technical design disciplines.
Collaborate with the VP, of Production and Director Technical Services Group in forecasting project staffing requirements and budgets.
Provide preliminary technical Audio and Video Systems support to facilitate a dialogue for collaborative design among creative and technical team members including technical system demos and mock-ups.
Provide a common point of contact between Project Managers, Design Managers, Coordinators, Creative Directors and Executive Producers to assist in the development Audio / Video design concepts.
Create an environment that supports discussion of various types of Audio / Video systems and their effects when used in different environments in terms that can be easily understood by those with and without a technical background in Audio / Video and projection systems.
Documentation of Audio / Video systems including acoustic modeling, CAD, technical manuals and written narratives explaining the system architecture, use, operation and pros and cons of the different systems.
An understanding of a multi-discipline design approach incorporating Show Control, Audio, Video and Lighting systems interface.
Assist in the creation of Requests for Proposal (RFP) for Audio / Video technical design including the use of contracted third-party estimating services.
Evaluation of bid responses by third party service providers, vendors, and contractors for various projects.
Provide onsite Audio / Video system quality control (QC), including system analysis, calibration, tuning and toning incorporating both the ability to listen critically and the use of Universal Measurement Platforms such as EASERA, SATlive, Spectral CalMAN Pro, Quantum Data, X-Rite Eye Pro, RTA and SPL equipment.
Represent Thinkwell Group at industry functions and conventions, including serving on convention panels or as a speaker.
Knowledge & Skills (Minimum Requirements)
Self-motivation and Strong organizational skills are a must.
Able to Collaborate with team members and communicate effectively.
Permanent Installation design experience for Theme Park, Museum, and Architectural environments.
A complete understanding of all aspects of the Audio / Video system technical design process and the effect those systems have on other disciplines workflow and design activities.
Can demonstrate the ability to manage and supervise others performing audio/video technical system design and integration on multiple projects.
Possess a full understanding of Analog and Digital Audio Systems including the methodology of interconnecting various Digital and Analog Audio / Video equipment or systems.
Proficiency with AutoCAD and ideally Revit
Knowledgeable in programming QSCS, Soundweb, MediaMatrix, AudioCore, SFX, Meyer Sound LCS Cue Station running on Matrix3 and other DSP processing applications.
Working knowledge of digital and analog equipment including DSP, Parametric and Graphic EQ, DAC, USB Audio, Video Servers, and Players.
Must be able to grasp concepts and acquire new skills quickly to meet project demands.
Must have extensive knowledge of all aspects Audio and Video Architecture including Large and Small format Projection techniques and systems.
Must understand signal flow and methodology of large format sound and distributed Audio / Video and Video over IP systems.
Comprehensive knowledge of I.T. network architecture and system design.
A working knowledge of acoustics, wave theory, and the physics of sound as they apply to a variety of Audio environments.
Experienced in recording and sound reinforcement microphone techniques including selection and placement.
Familiarity with recording studio setup, operation, including multiple microphone techniques and practices.
Knowledge of the fundamentals of computer networking (client-server, peer-to-peer topologies, file transfer or sharing across Mac OS X and Windows, etc.)
Understanding of Radio Frequency (RF) systems as they pertain to Wi-Fi, wireless intercom and microphone systems.
Education & Experience
5 years in-field experience.
Prior analog and digital studio experience as the Audio & Video Systems Designer in both project and “core staff” roles.
Previous Audio / Video Systems Design experience in both live entertainment, theater and permanent installation environments including museum, live show, theme park area development and attraction.
Preferred Additional Skills & Experience:
Independent, assistant or associate audio and video system design experience is a plus
Previous experience in studio and live entertainment Audio / Video mixing, mastering and monitor mixer production experience.
Digital and analog Systems Design experience is highly valued.
