Renowned European Research University Becomes Second to Certify that the UV-C Boxer disinfects production gear from Covid-19 in just 3 minutes

The independent study makes the CARTONI UV-C BOXER the first device specially designed for the film industry to be certified to sanitize against microorganisms & COVID-19.

Rome, Italy – The University of Siena, the highly-rated Phase IV testing facility in the country, has certified that Cartoni’s UV-C Boxer neutralizes microorganisms, including COVID-19, in just three minutes. The test results make the UV-C Boxer disinfection cabinet the first device specially designed for the film and television industry proven to disinfect.

The Testing Process

The tests were performed by Doctor Gabriele Messina, Ph.D., the University of Siena’s Head of Medical Biotechnologies Bioengineering Lab. The tests also marked among the most rigorous to date. The university tested the UV-C Boxer’s effectiveness in the following areas:

  • The efficacy of disinfection in relation to the distance from the UV-C Boxer’s ten medical-grade UV-C lamps
  • The efficacy of disinfection in 30 and 60-second increments
  • Finally, the university also tested the effectiveness of disinfection on irregularly shaped production equipment, such as digital cinema cameras.

Research and Test Results

The university repeated each test several times to ensure that the Boxer performed consistently. In each of the tests, the UV-C Boxer neutralized 99.99% of microorganisms. The university also determined that the Boxer effectively neutralized microorganisms regardless of the shape of the gear.

In tests with a digital cinema camera, it was found that the Boxer had a 99.99% disinfection rate – including a99.9999% disinfection rate of the handle which was closest to the UV lamps, and a 99.998% efficacy rate on the eyepiece.  The test results make the UV-C Boxer the first device lab-tested and certified to neutralize COVID.

The UV-C Boxer allows productions and rental houses to evenly sanitize multiple objects at a time, which may unknowingly contaminate film and video sets.

“We are thrilled to be able to provide a certified solution to disinfect props, gear, and devices as the world and our industry look to get back to work – safely,” says Elisabetta Cartoni, the CEO of CARTONI Professional Camera Supports.

She adds, “Although designed for the production community, we can see how the BOXER could have other applications in other industries.”

About the UV-C BOXER

The newly designed Cartoni UV-C BOXER has a large sliding boxlike container for safe loading and sanitization of multiple pieces of gear at the same time. Like all UV light, exposure to UV-C rays can be dangerous to humans, so Cartoni designed the BOXER with a safety lock system to avoid accidental UV-C irradiation.  If the door to the BOXER chamber is not safely locked, the UV-C lamps will not activate.

The UV-C BOXER is safe if properly used, effective, and fast. Operational indoors and outdoors, it’s ideal for carrying to locations. Equipped with wheels with positive locks, the Boxer can easily be moved around on flat surfaces or studios.

What is the UV-C BOXER Advantage?

UV-C Boxer certified to disinfect

The Cartoni UV-C BOXER is the only medical-grade UV-C device designed for film and video equipment.  The UV-C medical-grade lamps are tested to provide ten times the irradiation needed to sanitize the surface of objects in the device. The reflective walls provide an even distribution of the radiation on the entire surface of the item to be disinfected.

The power of a reflected beam is 40% of the original beam, exceeding the needed germicidal effect by five times. Each lamp has a life of 6,000 hours and has no ozone release.

The typical length of time needed to disinfect and sanitize a set of equipment, including a camera, two lenses, two batteries, microphone, etc., is just three minutes. For effective sanitization, the objects must be well arranged and spaced in the BOXER chamber to ensure no overlapping.
