Emergence of Disruptive VR Content Creation Tools

Award-winning virtual reality software developer Nurulize has unveiled two revolutionary tools, first demonstrated at SIGGRAPH 2017, that promise a new standard for VR.

Atom View & Nu Design New VR solutions enable super-fast cinematic quality display and collaborative environment editing within the virtual environment.

Atom View is a new VR engine capable of generating environments in stunning quality up to 150 times faster than traditional game engines. Meanwhile, Nu Design is a collaborative virtual production toolset for building, viewing and manipulating scenes in VR.

Atom View: VR display engine

Atom View is a groundbreaking VR display engine designed to make virtual reality content creation faster, easier, and more realistic than ever before. Using Atom View, filmmakers and 3D artists can convert captured real-world scans into cinematic-quality VR scenes and objects faster than than ever before.

Atom View is an agnostic standalone tool able to accept captured data from all leading 3D scanners, offline graphics renderers, and 360 cameras, and efficiently converts this data to real-time VR content in just two steps, whereas game engines require multiple rounds of optimization. Inside Atom View, users can edit, color, import, and prepare data for export. Atom View outputs to multiple VR headset formats including Oculus Rift and HTC Vive. Atom View works with Unreal Engine 4 via its own plugin.

Atom View has already been utilized on numerous VR films and commercials, including an upcoming Ridley Scott-produced Alien project directed by Director, David Karlak.

Scott Metzger, Chief Technology Officer & Co-founder at Nurulize, comments:

“When it comes to replicating reality in VR, and creating something that’s filled with detail, Atom View is the answer. It takes things above and beyond what VR content creators are currently limited to in terms of polycount and frame rate, in half the time. It’s the Photoshop or Final Cut Pro for virtual reality.”

Nu Design: collaborative pre-production in VR

Nu Design – powered by Atom View – is a virtual customizable, freeform space, in which multiple users can collaboratively create, assess, and mark up 3D environments. By combining the worlds of physical production and VFX in one VR space, directors, production heads, and producers can rapidly iterate and sketch out shots in a whole new approach to pre-production and pre-visualization.

Both Atom View and Nu Design are now in beta with a commercial release is planned for later this year. Augmented Reality-compatible versions are also currently in development.
