Fraunhofer IIS easyDCP Software Suite

The term Digital Cinema Package (DCP) is the collection of digital files used to store and convey Digital Cinema (DC) audio, image, and data streams. The term is defined by the Digital Cinema Initiatives, LLC in their recommendations for packing of DC contents – Digital Cinema Package from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The exceptional engineering talents of Fraunhofer IIS has established what will be the industry standard for continuing to enable the replacement of film reels by the development of the brilliantly designed easyDCP Software Suite! The easyDCP Software Suite features three key components: easyDCP Creator, easyDCP Player, easyDCP KDM Generator.

First, the easyDCP Creator is a software tool which offers ease of creation of both Interop and SMPTE compliant DCP. The software operates on both standard PC or MAC and offers an engineered design for the small to medium sized production organization to properly and correctly distribute digital cinema packages to the big screen with only a few clicks! With format support up to 4K (4096×2160) and progressive HD (1920 x 1080 picture content, importation of DPX,TIFF,JPEG,BMP,PNG, and JPEG 2000 image files, and with an easy to use self-explanatory user interface, this is the best software to date! Coming soon is the easyDCP Creator(+) 2.0 this will support Quicktime input formats, load existing DCPs, and provides up to 16 audio channels, etc…..

The easyDCP Player is a real time JPEG 2000 decoder of 2K content with real-time decoding of 2K@48 fps, adjustable frame rates, customizable color space conversion, and synchronized audio playback provides the optimum solution for post production facilities and small sized digital cinema production houses! The new release of  easyDCP Player(+) ver. 1.6 is available now and provides the rendering of subtitles, WPlayback of encrypted DCPs, and stereoscopic playback which covers all anaglyph, interleaved, and shutter glasses for the viewing audience…

The easyDCP KDM Generator enables the Key Delivery Messages (KDM) for digital cinemas. Supporting the digital signature and being scriptable, ensures that your generated KDM’s  are trustworthy. Featuring three easy to follow steps being: (1st) Load the Distribution KDM (DKDM) or Fraunhofer Digest (2nd) Choose your folder with all playback-server-certs and (3rd) set your start and end dates…Also, just announced today (Feb. 4th) Fraunhofer IIS’ Department Moving Picture Technologies announces the general availability of its easyDCP Software Suite in Blacmagic’s DaVinci Resolve 10. With easyDCP, Blackmagic has enhanced its post-production workflow with the capability to generate, encrypt and playback digital cinema packages. (More to come on this interesting and exciting news!)

Here’s some background information about Fraunhofer IIS: Founded in 1985 the Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits IIS in Erlangen, today with more than 780 staff members, ranks first among the Fraunhofer Institutes concerning headcount and revenues. As the main inventor of mp3 and universally credited with the co-development of AAC audio coding standard, Fraunhofer IIS has reached worldwide recognition. It provides research services on contract basis and technology licensing. The Fraunhofer IIS organization is part of Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, based in Munich, Germany.

And About the Moving Picture Technologies: The department Moving Picture Technologies develops new innovative imaging systems and procedures based on High Dynamic Range (HDR), light field and 3D capturing methods. Main application areas are the motion picture and TV industry. The algorithms will be used to extend technical and creative opportunities on the set and in the post-production. To achieve practical use specific components like image processing ASICs, software tools or complete prototypes and devices will be developed.
