Kochi Sun Sun Uses Blackmagic Replay for High School Volleyball Finals

Blackmagic Design today announced that Kochi Sun Sun Broadcasting Inc. adopted the Blackmagic Replay system and used it for the broadcast of the Spring High School Volleyball Prefectural Finals.

Kochi Sun Sun Broadcasting is a Fuji TV Network affiliate serving Kochi Prefecture, broadcasting national network programs from Fuji TV as well as local news, information programs and sports coverage. As part of an update to its OB van, the station introduced the Blackmagic Replay system and used it to record the finals of the Spring High School Volleyball Kochi Prefectural Tournament, which the station broadcasts annually.

“We introduced the Blackmagic Replay system as part of our OB van upgrade project,” said Yoshifusa Mori of the engineering department at Kochi Sun Sun Broadcasting. “Previously, we didn’t have a dedicated replay system and relied on HD VTR decks instead. However, those setups were quite limited with only a single output per input. We wanted something more flexible, so we began evaluating various systems.”

After considering solutions from other manufacturers, the station selected a system comprised of Blackmagic Cloud Store 20TB network storage solution, four HyperDeck Studio HD Plus broadcast decks, a Blackmagic Media Player 10G capture and playback solution, DaVinci Resolve Replay Editor and DaVinci Resolve Studio.

Footage from each camera was encoded as ProRes files on the HyperDeck Studio HD Plus units and consolidated onto the Blackmagic Cloud Store 20TB. The material was then mounted in DaVinci Resolve Studio as growing media, where replay clips were created using DaVinci Resolve Replay Editor and played out to air via the Blackmagic Media Player 10G.

Speaking about the Blackmagic Replay system, Mori said, “Compared to the systems we used before, the increased flexibility, such as being able to freely select inputs, has been a huge advantage. It has expanded the range of ways we can present replays. Of course, some familiarization is required, but we used it for the Spring High School Volleyball tournament for the first time and were able to get it on air without any major issues.”

Mori also highlighted another feature: “Blackmagic Replay includes AI powered slow motion using DaVinci Resolve Studio’s AI tools. It allows footage from standard cameras to be played back as if it were high speed slow motion, and it was very well received.”

He concluded, “Even when there are no sports broadcasts, we continue to make use of the system. Last August, we used the HyperDeck Studio HD Plus units for part of the recording of the Yosakoi Festival, a large scale traditional dance festival held in Kochi. At present, since there are no regular sports productions scheduled, we have removed the Cloud Store from the OB van and are using it as a NAS for special program recordings. This allows us to immediately use recorded material in our in house editing environment.”
