A new international commercial for Nokian Tyres, titled “Alive,” showcases the tires’ performance across various terrains using a range of Blackmagic Design cameras. Directed by Ashton Sterling Bingham and shot by DP Sam Sargeant, the spot highlights the durability and adaptability of the tires in extreme conditions.
Challenging Environments
The commercial was filmed across Utah, featuring locations such as Swing Arm City, Uinta National Forest, Uinta Mountains during a snowstorm, Bonneville Salt Flats, and Knolls Recreation Area. Sargeant and his team faced diverse challenges, including shooting in cold temperatures, dust, wind, mud, and even underneath vehicles.
Camera Setup
Sargeant used the URSA Mini Pro 12K as the primary A camera attached to a pursuit vehicle. The Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6K Pro and Pocket Cinema Camera 4K were employed for interior shots within the main vehicle and external angles, including positions near tires and beneath the car.
Workflow Efficiency
The use of multiple cameras allowed the team to capture various perspectives simultaneously, saving time during production. Blackmagic RAW was highlighted as a key component, providing high-quality image fidelity without excessive post-processing requirements or storage needs.
Post Production
In post-production, Colorist Keyhan Bayegan utilized DaVinci Resolve Studio for editing, grading, visual effects (VFX), and audio work. The collaboration tools in DaVinci Resolve enabled remote live grading sessions between Bayegan in Los Angeles and Sargeant & Bingham in Utah.
Bayegan praised the integration of color correction with editorial and VFX features in DaVinci Resolve, allowing for efficient workflow management from editing to finishing. The software’s versatility enabled the team to focus on creative aspects rather than technical issues.
