Engaging All Original Content and Carbon Neutral Business Plan at the Core
Newyonder is a streaming service and film production company, aiming to make the world a more sustainable place, one film at a time. All content to date, is produced by Newyonder and distributed globally through pay-per-view rentals, delivered with Red Bee Media’s Managed OTT services. As a certified B Corp®, Newyonder intends to measure its entire social and environmental impact, including the energy consumption and carbon footprint of creating and streaming its films. Its first two feature documentary films, Wild Isles and Three Moons of Biyangdo, are now streaming on newyonder.earth.
All content on Newyonder will initially be available through high-quality (4K and UHD on compatible devices) pay-per-view streaming, enabled by Red Bee’s Managed OTT services. As the amount of content expands, the service will evolve into a subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) offering.
All films are albert-certified (BAFTA) carbon-neutral, sustainable productions with the ambition to have a positive social and environmental impact. This includes minimizing travel, compensating for any emissions, hiring local crew, and investing parts of the revenue in nature-based sustainability initiatives, such as seagrass creation and other regenerative impact projects. As Newyonder’s community grows, so does its positive impact on the world.
“In essence, you go beyond the story and subscribe for change® – to be immersed in the power of story whilst being a part of something bigger – to help restore the planet,” said Jon Cleave, CEO and Founder of Newyonder. “I hope to be able to influence other media companies and filmmakers to follow in our footsteps, putting sustainability at the forefront without compromising creativity, quality, reach and profitability. I’m happy to have the support from Red Bee on this journey. Their commitment to sustainability in the media industry made the choice easy when we were looking for a streaming partner.”
Newyonder is currently carbon neutral and aims to be carbon negative once their regenerative impact projects are implemented. One of the biggest challenges is the measurement of emissions from streaming, but the company is leaning on recent research and will continue to develop and refine its methods.
“We take pride in supporting Newyonder in their quest to make the world more sustainable and inspire others in media and entertainment to do the same,” says James Arnold, Chief Commercial Officer, Red Bee. “Red Bee is already supporting sustainability initiatives in the media industry, and now we are looking forward to following Newyonder’s progress, learning from it, and together taking further steps to preserve the planet”.
Newyonder is producing non-fiction films with human interest stories connected to the natural environment, but as the company grows the content will most likely evolve into more categories – into the world of fiction, blockbusters and beyond – all whilst making a difference.
Red Bee supports sustainability in the media industry in multiple ways, including the internal, global and employee led “Green Bee” initiative as well as sponsoring the DPP Committed to Sustainability Programme. In the latter, Red Bee recently achieved a 5/5 score, by significantly decreasing the company’s energy consumption in the past year.
Red Bee’s comprehensive Managed OTT Services enables brands and content owners to launch a fully-fledged streaming offering, rapidly and easily, no matter the audience or business idea. It supports all content formats, including live, linear, catch-up and on-demand, low latency streaming, as well as a full range of monetization options (such as ad-funded, subscription, pay-per-view and vouchers). Audience segmentation, personalization and security is done easily through advanced geo blocking functionality and DRM options, as well as Red Bee’s powerful recommendation engine. Many of Red Bee’s other services integrate easily with the platform, including content aggregation, metadata and automatic captioning.
