Product Spotlight: Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K

It comes as no surprise that Blackmagic Design creates incredible products at incredible pricing. The new Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K (expected availability date of September 3, 2018) is focused not only for the professional but also for the consumer.  This incredible cinema camera features a 4/3″ sensor which captures 4096×2160 DCI 4K images at rates up to 60fps in a wide variety of codecs including CinemaDNG Raw/Raw 3:1/Raw 4:1, and various ProRes 422 options and slow-motion rates of up to 120fsp in cropped Full HD.  The camera also uses the MFT (Mirco Four Thirds) lens mount as the original Pocket Cinema Camera, which mean that your upgrade path is simple. Also, the MFT allows for different lens adapters such as PL,C,EF so you can use your favorite lens manufacturers such as Canon, Nikon, Pentax, Leica, and even Panavision (if brave enough).

The ease of internal recording comes in 3 different flavors: standard SD cards, CFast 2.0, or UHS-ll cards or for longer clips utilize the USB-C output to an external drive such as a Samsung Portable SSD T5 (see our product spotlight here: www.avbeat.com/product-spotlight-the-samsung-ssd-t5/. The speed of the USB-C is extremely important when shooting high quality lossless 12-bit RAW or 60fps 4K and when finished hook up the same drive to begin your editing and post production. The USB-C Expansion Port also accepts power so you can charge portable batteries, mobile phone, and even a laptop. The Blackmagic OS utilized on the Pocket Cinema Camera 4k is the exact same which is used on the URSA Mini. So if your in the market for a supplemental  (2nd cam situation) this camera will perform without any visual discrepancies. The major Blackmagic OS features 3D LUTs for both recording and monitoring, HDR output via HDMI, metadata entry, custom presets, extended video format, Bluetooth remote control, external timecode for the audio input, and RAW recording. The same menus and interfaces are exact to that of the URSA Mini including screen overlays that show recording parameters, status, histogram, focus and peaking indicators, and playback controls. The 5″ touchscreen is extremely bright and there’s even a speaker located near the screen for easy and quick playback and review.

The connections on the Pocket Cinema Camera 4K are perfect, it features a full size HDMI connection, high speed USB-C expansion port and a mini XLR connection with +48V (Phantom Power) for attaching condenser microphones. The unit uses standard removable LP-E6 type batteries and has a locking DC power connector. The included 100-240 volt plug pack can charge the camera and charge the battery at the same time. It comes with an international socket adapter for out of country travel.

Don’t forget that any Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K purchase includes a full version of DaVinci Resolve Studio. The perfect editing software for any type of project which provides completely lossless workflow for native editing, color correction, effects, audio and delivery. The Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K is priced at $1,295.00 and any added LP-E6 batteries are priced at $35.00. So bottom line, for under $2,000 you can have your very own camera and production workflow in place and start making those projects you’ve been dreaming of…(that is, if you have the glass).
