Job Summary

The J. Paul Getty Museum seeks a creative and strategic thinker to join the award-winning design team. Come create exceptional interactions and experiences with our collection at both sites: the Getty Center and the Getty Villa. Reporting to the Head of Design, the Senior Designer is responsible for design and production of the visitor experience from gallery installations, special exhibitions and wayfinding, to promotional graphics, fixed position interactive kiosks, and mobile device experience. You will work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary design group and staff from across the organization to assess needs; conceptualize, design and prototype ideas; produce and deploy top quality solutions.

We are looking for a person with forward thinking approach to design and with knowledge in exhibition design, showcase design and object presentation.

Major Job Responsibilities

Having an overarching collaborative approach the ideal candidate will:

  • Represent the user’s experience and interaction with our art collections, architecture, and garden environments; translate visitor/user requirements into defined specifications and lead the effort to develop the right solution.

  • Create elegant, sophisticated designs for artwork display.

  • Translate interpretive and experiential goals into rewarding and compelling solutions.

  • Oversees design and production of graphic designs in large and small environmental applications, print and digital forms.

  • Coordinate approach in areas of overlapping initiatives such as branding, social media strategy, and wayfinding.

  • Develop design prototypes, plans, diagrams, renderings, wireframes, usage scenarios, information architecture, usability, navigation maps and other design documentation.

  • Define and create innovative user experiences, for multiple audiences/situations/, with interaction styles and modes that result in improved user engagement.

  • Pitch ideas and synthesize feedback from presentations and trials.

  • Develop and maintain a workflow master plan. With relevant project teams establish projects, goals and priorities. Have awareness of the impact that your work may have on your own and other ongoing projects and staff.
  • Prepare time and cost estimates for projects; prepare project plans; hire and oversee work of specialty services to advance project work.

  • Provide leadership to project designers and other supporting staff.

  • Develop expert-level knowledge of competitive and complementary solutions and bring new ideas to the team. Work to nurture expertise within the Design department.


  • Bachelor’s degree in Design, Masters in specialty area preferred
  • 7+ years of design experience

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

The ideal candidate will have the following qualifications:

  • Degree in Exhibition Design, Furniture Design, Industrial
    Design, Graphic Design, Interior Design, Architecture, or related field preferred.

  • A recognized thought leader as evidenced through publications, awards, speaking engagements and board appointments.

  • High degree of creativity.

  • Strong organizational, analytical and problem-solving abilities.

  • Ability to effectively communicate
    ideas and persuade outcomes through design presentations.

  • Superior communication skills and diplomacy.

  • Expertise in visual design using software tools like Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator), Vectorworks, and SketchUp is required.
    Prototyping skills using tools like HTML5, Flash, Java, Flex, Dreamweaver and OR the
    knowledge of imaging / video domain applications is an asset.

  • Advanced skills in business software including: Microsoft word, Excel and Powerpoint.

  • Proven skills in hand-sketching, drafting, and model making.

  • Proven knowledge of museum conservation needs and practices.

  • Knowledge of industrial design and architectural practices, including life/safety and ADA requirements.

  • Knowledge of museum gallery and showcase lighting.

  • Proven track record and a passion for designing compelling, award-winning
    design. A great portfolio of work / samples of experience design work, in the broadest sense, is a must.

  • Attention to detail

  • Team player having experience working with various departments within an institution.

  • Proven ability to work on multiple projects, of different scope and complexity, at various stages of development, in a deadline driven work environment.

  • Ability to develop responsive ideas that address defined budgets.

  • Ability to develop cogent project, business plans.

  • Proven record of leading and mentoring others.

  • Drive for excellence in all facets of work.
