Position: TV Production Engineer

Job Summary

This position is responsible for the day-to-day operations and maintenance of BYU Broadcasting’s production studios and remote video production trucks. This includes, but is not limited to the following: engineer in charge (EIC) of remote production trucks; supervising, training and mentoring students that work in support of BYU Broadcasting production events; inspections of production equipment and production facilities; studio engineering; coordinating with other departments at BYU Broadcasting, other departments of BYU, and external entities. This position is also called upon to assist with other maintenance and operational activities of BYU Broadcasting as needed.

Responsibilities and Duties

1. Acts as the Engineer in Charge of multi-camera production shoots.

 Responsible for supervising the operation and technical maintenance of production studios and remote production trucks.

 Ensures that production crews and student engineers properly set-up and operate various production systems.

 Ensures that all systems on the assigned production facilities and vehicles are kept in proper working condition.

 Trains other staff and students to ensure they are familiar with various production systems.

 Coordinates and performs preventative maintenance.

2. Maintenance of production technical infrastructures

 Ensures all production equipment’s operational integrity.

 Performs routine and emergency maintenance.

 Coordinates and performs preventative maintenance.

 In addition to being solely responsible for specific BYUB production facilities, this position assists other production engineers as needed with other BYUB engineering tasks.

3. Supervision and mentoring of up to four student engineers.

 Trains and mentors student engineers who directly report to this position.

 Collaborates with Manager of Engineering on recommendations for improvement and discipline of student engineers.

4. Trains operators on correct operation of equipment

 Provides technical training for equipment operators.

 Helps develop best practices and usage procedures for all production equipment.

5. Maintains an awareness of new techniques and equipment developments

 Attends conventions, seminars and workshops as assigned.

 Studies technical manuals, periodical literature, and uses on line resources to keep up to date with the newest technology.

6. Provides information to and assists the Manager of Engineering

 Advises the Manager of Engineering on new equipment purchases.
 Provides maintenance history and recommends maintenance procedures.
 Provides preventative maintenance plan.  Coordinates division wide maintenance support as assigned.
 Performs maintenance of various broadcast equipment as needed.

Qualifications and Skills

Minimum education/experience required:

3 years minimum experience which includes:

 Engineering in charge of production facilities and events.

 Maintenance and repair of electronic equipment to the board level. Work from and update schematic/flow drawings.

 Operating and maintaining of various production systems and the sub-systems that comprise them.

 Understanding of analog and digital video and audio signals, to include, ASI, IP, SDI, AES, etc. Candidates with greater understanding of audio standards preferred.

Preferred: Bachelor’s Degree in engineering discipline.

5 or more years of experience that includes:

 Engineering in charge of production facilities and events.

 Maintenance and repair of electronic equipment to the board level. Work from and update schematic/flow drawings.

 Operating and maintaining of various production systems and the sub-systems that comprise them.

 Understanding of analog and digital video and audio signals, to include, ASI, IP, SDI, AES, etc. Candidates with greater understanding of audio standards preferred.
