TVU Helps Fox Affliate Slash Production Costs

Fox television affiliate station KPTM, in Omaha, Nebraska, was looking to slash its production costs without losing the edge of bringing breaking news to its audience. The station turned to TVU Networks and discovered their TVU Pack was just the answer! TVU Networks, based in Mountain View, California, is a technology company leading the way in IP based live video solutions. TVU works with customers in over 80 countries around the world to transform SDI based broadcast operations to an IP based solution.

KPTM Fox 42 was looking for a way to save money on live broadcasts as well as a viable alternative to their costly microwave trucks. Ed Bok, Chief Engineer at Fox 42, said that, “Running a cost effective news gathering organization is one of our primary goals both in the short term and the long term. As part of the strategy, we wanted to rely less on the microwave trucks.”

Bok further explained that the station had two remote microwave trucks but they were expensive to keep running and they found that they also had to put on extra engineers. That was when they decided to turn to TVU Networks and their TVUPacks.

TVU makes four different types of Packs that are fully capable of providing SD and HD quality video. They are IP based live video mobile uplink solutions designed specifically for live broadcasts. Their cellular 3G/4G transmission technology solution is now being used in the field by thousands of broadcast professionals all around the globe.

“Our use of the TVUPack,” said Bok, “has been a big part of our strategy of reducing the complexity of getting news to air as well as the cost of doing so.”

Some of the unique features to the TVUPack include such innovations as:

  • Multiple 3G/4G/LTE connections which can support at least eight 3G/4G/LTE microwave, satellite, WIFI and BGAN data connections. Configuration and start up is as simple as pushing one button to go live.
  • The units start up in less than 20 seconds and can transmit with sub-second latency as low as 0.8 seconds. It also has real time HD file transfer while using Smart VBR technology that will instantly manage and control the transmission bit rate on a user selected latency.
  • The TVUPack technology also includes on demand video retrieval and the units can record up to seven hours of video while also including wireless hotspot functionality which will allow production crews to edit video content even as they are in the field.

KPTM Fox 42 has been using the TVUPack to cover everything from breaking news to high school football games to severe weather storms.

“We used the Pack,” said Broadcast IT Engineer Joe Meldrum , “to cover breaking news during a severe thunderstorm with high winds right from the stadium which would have been impossible with a microwave truck. The backpack worked perfectly, letting us go live on location… we’ve been able to go live with the backpack even in high winds which is something you can’t do with an OB van.”

TVU Network’s innovative TVU Packs are quickly becoming the go-to IP-based live video mobile uplink solution for broadcast providers.  For more information, visit:
