Long time Supervising Sound Editor and Sound Designer, Harry Cohen, will be honored by the Motion Picture Sound Editors (MPSE) at their annual awards presentation gala on February 19 in Los Angeles. Cohen, who has been nominated 18 times for a MPSE Golden Reel Award, will receive the organization’s Career Achievement Award for his distinguished work in over 150 feature films and television shows.
His distinguished work down through the years will allow Cohen to join the ranks of fellow Career Achievement Award winners including Richard King, Skip Lievsay, Walter Murch Larry Singer and Randy Thom. The MPSE, founded in 1953, is a non profit organization of professional music and sound editors who work in the television, film and gaming industries.
On receiving the news of his receiving the coveted award at the organization’s 64th annual event, Cohen said, “I am surprised and honored to be recognized by the friends and colleagues in the MPSE. Sound editors work under the radar and are largely invisible to the public, but those of us who practice the craft, know how hard it is to produce a great soundtrack.”
As mentioned, Cohen’s illustrious career has included work on well over 150 television programs and feature films. He has work with such Hollywood luminaries as Oliver Stone, Rob Marshall, Ridley Scott, Edward Zwick, Roland Emmerich and a distinguished host of many others. His most recent effort was working with director Peter Berg on Deepwater Horizon. He has also had some major collaborations with director Quentin Tarantino. He worked on the Tarantino films, Django Unchained, Kill Bill (Volumes 1 and 2), Inglorious Bastards and The Hateful Eight.
Cohen, who hails from Queens, New York, began his career as a musician but switched over to sound when he was offered an opportunity when he was asked to organize a sound effects library at a recording studio while he was on a visit to Los Angeles. In 2000, Cohen was nominated for an Emmy Award for his work on the television series The Others and won a Golden Reel in 1999 for his work and contribution to A Texas Funeral.
Tom McCarthy, MPSE President, remarked that, “Harry is an endlessly resourceful and imaginative artist who is always inventing new ways to use sound to tell stories. We are very pleased to honor the creativity and dedication of a sound pro who embodies the spirit of the MPSE and its members.”
