Hulu recently announced that it has secured a library of more than 50 Disney films in a deal that was made exclusively between both Hulu and Disney. Disney, which owns 30% of Hulu, now sees Hulu become the only subscription streaming video service with exclusive access to both feature films as well as animated movies.
Hulu’s deal with Disney gives their subscribers access to such long beloved Disney favorites as Mulan, Sister Act, Air Bud, Lilo & Stitch, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Tarzan and dozens of others. It is another shot by Hulu over NetFlix’s bow as the two streaming giants continue to try and out maneuver the other. Many of the new titles from the Disney library are already being offered while the rest will be rolled out over next few months.
Movies slated to be shown during 2017 include the likes of Con Air, Romy & Michele’s High School Reunion, and The Mighty Ducks. Hulu is already receiving certain content packages from the Disney-ABC Television Group libraries to include shows and other entertainment programming from other Disney channels. Netflix does, however, have a deal with Disney to the rights to stream Disney movies made in 2016 and beyond.
Hulu’s CEO, Craig Erwich said that, “The Disney brand is synonymous with beloved movies that the whole family can enjoy. Expanding our offering of top rated kids and family programming has been a top priority for us and we know that viewers will love watching these films over and over again on our service.”
The terms of the deal between Hulu and Disney were not made public but this coup by Hulu should take the streaming platform a long way toward establishing itself as one of the premier players in the industry. All of the streaming giants; Hulu, Amazon and Netflix, continue to spend and invest heavily in children’s programming because they have found that kids programming is a huge draw with regard to selling subscriptions.
